7 Mentor Session with a coach training introduction to focus the development process.
- Number of hours: Each session is 1 ½ hours; total 7 hours of mentoring and 3.5 hours of Core Competency Coach Training/Supervision at an MCC Level. The distinctions between observed PCC and MCC coaching will be explored.
Description of the Learning – Exploration at an MCC Level
Session 1: Create results and lasting impact quickly
review the essential elements of Reflective Inquiry, and how to create more impact in your coaching by using more reflective practices followed by questions. Clients view their stories more objectively, moving them out of being stuck in their problems to recognizing how their thinking has limited the achievement of their goals and desires. Reflective Inquiry provides clients with the clarity and the confidence they need to recognize what they need to do and commit to acting.
Session 2: Balancing the structure and flow of coaching
The core of coaching is the spontaneous flow of the conversations with the coach and client. Yet the structure of agreeing up front on the desired outcome of the conversation and ensuring a commitment to action at the end of coaching is required to ensure progress and satisfying results at the end of session. This session will look at how coaches integrate the structure of coaching while still keeping it a creative process.
Session 3: Embody a compassionate and confident coaching mindset
even in the most difficult coaching conversations. This session looks at the mental habits coaches needs to develop to stay present, curious, and maintain the belief in the potential of the client throughout the conversation no matter what emotions and changes in direction emerge. It is easier to develop skills than to change mental habits. This session will look at exercises coaches can do to make their practices automatic habits.
Session 4: Going deeper for profound results
by looking into what is keeping the client stuck beyond the beliefs and assumptions framing the coaching. We will look at how Social Needs and Conflicts of Values show up in coaching, and how to bring these blind spots into the client’s awareness. We will also look at how to gently help clients birth their insights if they are having trouble articulating what is coming up for them.
Session 5: Assessing resistance, coachability, and accountability
This session will look at how to assess levels of coachability. They will learn how to discern if the resistance can be elevated to a coaching relationship or if the client is truly not willing to be coached.
Session 6: Ensuring the desired outcome is clear
One of the most difficult skills of coaches is turning the topic or problem into a clear desired outcome for the session, and then monitoring if the outcome shifts or changes during the conversation. Coaches need to know how to invite clients to choose their outcome throughout the conversation. After a brief review of technique, participants will watch a demonstration and discuss it before they practice for themselves.
Session 7: Ending the session with commitment and accountability.
The ending of the session is often treated too lightly. This session will look at specific ways to move from an insight or new awareness into committed actions steps. It will also reinforce how to ensure progress through a discussion around possible distraction.
The structure of each session includes:
- Share content and answer questions. If time, Marcia will do a brief demonstration, but she guarantees doing at least 3 demos during the 7 sessions of the mentoring.
- One person will coach for 20 minutes and Marcia gives developmental ideas with supportive comments from the group. At least 3 sessions will include 2 mentoring sessions where coaching is done by a participant. Everyone will coach at least once in the program.
- The mentoring will repeat with a new coach and client if Marcia didn’t do a demo.
